Workshops to Provide Guidance for Savings, Retirement System
With retirement benefit formulas recently improved and service credit added for past work in temporary positions, next month's UCSB retirement education workshops arrive at a propitious time.
Human Resources' Benefits Office and representatives from Fidelity Investment will hold four separate workshops on Oct. 3 and 4 in SAASB 3101. Each of the first-come, first-served sessions will be geared to different starting positions in employees' careers.
If you have yet to enroll in a savings or investment plan, for example, session number one, "Getting Started," will explain the benefits of beginning early, how to manage debt, investment basics, and show a video on "Managing Your Account On-Line." This workshop runs twice on Oct. 3, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and from 1-2 p.m.
Workshop number two, "Investment Strategies," aims at employees who are more than 10 years away from retirement and are currently participating in some form of saving or investment plan. The importance of periodically reviewing and rebalancing portfolios will be examined. This session also runs twice on Oct. 3, from 10-11 a.m. and from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Number three, "Retirement in View," is for employees who expect to retire within five to 10 years. Retirement expenses, income, and strategies for balancing them will be discussed in two sessions on Oct. 4: from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.
The last workshop, "Planning Your Retirement Income," is designed for those with fewer than five years to retirement. Distribution options, estate planning, and taxes are some of the topics covered on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
While the workshops need no reservations, the 30-minute personal consultation available from a Fidelity representative requires you to call ahead (800/642-7131) for a slot on one of these two days. Meetings will run between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
For employees seeking an overview of UC-sponsored savings plans a good place to start might be the UC Retirement System (UCRS) informational meetings scheduled once each month for the fall months. Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. in SAASB 3101 is the next session on UCRS.
Questions about these workshops and meetings, as well as about the one-time retirement service credit plan, can be addressed to specialists at x2489 or x2042. The following Web sites will help with details on the UCRS campus meetings
