William Bielby, professor of sociology, has been elected president of the 13,000-member American Sociological Association. Though his term will run 12 months from August 2002, as president-elect he is planning the annual meeting in 2003.

Jane Duran, a lecturer with the Black Studies Department, has published "Worlds of Knowing: Global Feminist Epistemologies" (Rout-ledge, 2001), a cross-cultural survey of feminist philosophies.

Maria Herrera-Sobek, professor of Chicano studies, gives a glossy platform to the work of Chicana artist "Santa Barraza: Artist of the Borderlands" (Texas A&M University Press, 2001). Barraza contributed 34 samples of her art.

Loy Lytle, professor of psychology and director of Summer Sessions, has been appointed acting dean of Extended Learning Services. A national search will be conducted for the permanent successor to John Maxwell, who retired as dean after 29 years of service to UCSB.

Christopher Scoates, most recently director of the Atlanta College of Art Gallery, has been appointed chief curator of the University Art Museum. He has 18 years of museum experience.

Tracy S. Kendler, psychology professor emerita, died on July 28, a few days short of her 83rd birthday. The native of New York City, who specialized in cognitive development, taught at Barnard College before coming to UCSB in 1963 with her husband, Howard, who survives her. She retired from the faculty in 1989, and he a year later. Other survivors include a half-sister and two sons.

Joan F. Mortell, former director of the Community Housing Office, died on Aug. 29 in Santa Barbara. The native of Green Bay, Wisc., was 74. She retired in 1991 after 28 years of UCSB service, most of it in housing. She is survived by a brother, who asks that donations go to the Mortell Scholarship Fund, c/o UCSB Housing & Residential Services, in lieu of flowers.
