  • BIRTHPLACE OF BLACK STUDIES
A plaque commemorating the birth of the UCSB Black Studies Department in the tumult of a 1968 black student takeover of a computer center in North Hall was ceremonially dedicated on Nov. 3 with a panel discussion and a candlelight procession. Henry Thomas, left, and Booker Banks, two of four of the original activists present at the ceremony, pose by the North Hall plaque authorized by the Academic Senate and the administration.
